Driver

An ex-con working as a driver for his pimp former cellmate forms an unlikely bond with a young prostitute, as they both try to escape the cycle of poverty, crime, and violence.

DRIVER is a bleak, character-focused film about human connection and existentialism. The central characters are victims of, and traumatised, by the conditions of living under contemporary capitalism; oppressive social hierarchies which dominate their lives, very often through violence. This is personified by both Trey's tormentors in prison and Camden's pimp / Trey's boss, Dickinson. As such, the film is ultimately about these two characters attempting to liberate themselves from this "condition".

The style and overall tone of the film very much borders on cinema verite. Although this is a fictitious piece, the aim is to create something that feels uncomfortably real for its audience. With the exception of some highly stylised scenes that represent Trey's internal world, the film will be made to look gritty, "off the cuff" and largely improvised - as if the screen were acting as a portal into real life events.

But the film is not all dark. In spite of the bleak subject matter, and social/philosophical themes, what drives the narrative is the evolution of Trey and Camden's relationship. The relationship, which is neither a friendship nor romantic partnership, acts as the bedrock in which everything else sprouts from. In the end, it's the strength of this relationship that allows the characters to liberate themselves from their oppression; that human solidarity and love can overcome the structures of injustice and subjugation within our society.
